Would you be prepared to show a live feed of yourself sitting on a toilet to raise money for something you totally believed in?
Simon Griffin’s did just that. He created a company called “Who Gives a Crap” and pledged to give half the proceeds to helping the more than than 2.4 billion people on the planet who do not have access to sanitation. Simon’s big ‘WHY’ was to make the world aware of the crisis in global sanitation.
Then to finance his first batch of toilet paper he raised the capital with crowd funding. You can see his campaign here.
Just imagine what this campaign has done for his business. He even went as far as showing a live feed of himself sitting on a toilet during this campaign. He was ready to put it all on the line.
What do you think it could do for your business if you raised $50,000 with a crowd funding campaign and half of that money went to a charity of your choice?
Imagine – you are in the business of making widgets. You need start up capital for your factory workshops. Imagine asking your friends to help you. Imagine that call for help going viral and have people who you have never met helping to fund your business.
There are a number of keys to the skill and the art of crowd funding. The first is the big WHY.
When your WHY is bigger than the HOW or the WHO or the WHEN or anything else.. you will also be ready to leap in with all you have.
And its all in the story – when you can tell the story that captures the imagination of the viewer or reader – it will spread like wildfire.
Most of you are aware of Buy1Give1 – it is the stories that they tell that encourage us to stand behind them and the thousands they support.
When your customers know your WHY will touch lives – will make a difference and that your heart is behind all you are doing – they will walk out of their way to buy your products and support your services.
The statistics show this to be true – get behind your favourite cause – advertise the fact that you are making a difference and watch the difference wash into your business.
Even if you start out doing it because of the stats and because it is your ‘corporate social responsibility’ as it grows, the difference you are making will create such a change in your life that it will quickly become the major reason you are stepping up to give back.
