Like most of us I am so busy doing my stuff I just don’t stop to investigate things fully. In the last couple of months I have. In fcat I managed to save around $150 a month by renegotiating various things like internet providers, insurances and memberships. All those things most of us just pay…because we always have. I was chatting with my ‘Accumulator’ friend and he said he spent a week renegotiating everything from his phone bill to his rates and ended up saving about $2,000. I thought: “Great what a hassle…can someone else do it for me?” But regardless I decided to look at a couple of things.
In doing all that I have become more aware of expenses…but here is one I never knew about.
Having just returned from the ‘Dreamcatchers Cruise’ of China, Japan and Korea I had been really careful to switch off the data roaming on my I-Phone. On Saturday I went to pay the account and saw a $200 data roaming fee, so I rung Vodafone.
The nice man on the phone (and he was actually really pleasant) told me it’s because I-Phones are too smart. You can turn off data roaming, but they still roam anyway and whilst you cant log on to any website (saving you $ apparently), the phone does register sites and you get charged for that. Having been on a ship, I was literally hitting different points all day for 7 days. The result was $200.
Now Vodafone were nice enough to reverse the charge as they could see it wasnt me, but now if I travel (which is always) I have to call them and they switch me off so no charge is there. This doesnt suit as I want data roaming for emergencies, but thats the only option. So here’s the thing folks. If you have an I-Phone be aware of that. I love my I-Phone and its great as everything (except being a phone – they could improve that) but if you want the best, expect to pay a little more for it. I was going to buy an I-Pad for travelling but hey, that may just be asking for trouble…hmmmn
